Glycerol is an important by-product of the production of biodiesel from vegetable oil or animal fat. Glycerol can be used in food, drugs, and many other industries worldwide.1) Medicine: Glycerol is often used as an moisture humectant in cream bases and emulsions for skin care preparations. Liquid oral, topical and injectable medications are sometimes suspended in a glycerol solution for stabilization and preservation, such as glyceryl guaiacolate which is used as an expectorant to treat persistent dry coughs.2) Food industry: Glycerol (known as glycerin or glycerine) is widely used in food products such as cake mix, frostings, fillings for baked good and ice cream cake. It also acts as preservative that prevents products from becoming too dry or too hard when stored at room temperature.3) Industrial uses: The high viscosity makes it a useful additive to lubricants. In cold climates its low freezing point also makes it useful antifreeze agents protection against freezing pipelines and points where liquid flows through valves or pumps. For example, hydraulic brake fluids contain 15-30 % glycerol to avoid freezing during cold winters in Europe. Additionally the low vapor pressure means it is almost insoluble in water holding components together even under stress behaviors making it suitable for emulsion explosives like dynamite. Also they are used energy transmission liquids in high voltage transformers reducing oxidation property helping them become more efficient electrical insulation materials
Research has been conducted to produce value-added productsfrom glycerol obtained from bio diesel production.
